Celebrating the cuisine and culture of Newfoundland & Labrador, Bacalao offers comfortable fine dining in a turn of the century home with a passionate focus on local seafood, game, produce and spirits.
Newfoundland shares its culinary history of enjoying salt cod with many other cultures. Bacalao (bak-al-OW) is the word used for salt cod (in various spellings and pronunciations) throughout the Mediterranean. The versatility and much-beloved nature of this time-honoured staple ingredient is the inspiration for our name and exemplifies our innovative interpretation of Newfoundland cuisine.
We attended Bacalao this afternoon for brunch. The Nouvelle Newfoundland Cuisine was exceptional, the service was superior and professional. It is impressive to have traditional Newfoundland food with exotic twists in a modern bistro style resto. One of the best experiences in Newfoundland without question. I will recommend it to anyone visiting the province.
First date night since second born and we made a great choice coming here. Wonderful! 2-20-2015

Thank you to all the staff who accommodated our group of 20 after my Dad’s funeral on such a short notice. Nothing but compliments to the assorted dishes they had and the atmosphere was great. I will certainly be back.

We visited your restaurant for lunch with my brother and sister-in-law and loved your emphasis on the local Newfoundland food. The presentataion was done with a flair, the taste was great and the service friendly, attentive and accommodating. We expecailly liked you partridge berry fiz and the ginger cake is unique and the best we’ve ever tasted. We’ll be back the next time we visit St. John’s. Kudo’s to the chef, and staff.

Spectacular food, wine and service. Nice to see even though you are a fine dinning class restaurant you have stayed true to the Newfoundland tradition in you dishes. If I’m in NL I want cod in any form. The fish was great, hope we can make it back some day?

My husband and I were in NF for a wedding (his 1st trip). We had spent the day sightseeing and were hungry for something not “fast food.” We say the ad for Bacalao at the Delta Hotel. We hoofed it up Barter’s Hill and suffice it to say we were not disappointed. My husband’s halibut was the best he had ever tasted with the lime/butterscotch/miso sauce. I had the risotto. Excellent!! We shared the calamari as an appetizer. Fantastic. We recommended this place to a fellow CFA who was attending the same wedding. Kudos for your menu, your staff and your work with local suppliers.

Best in St. John’s. My family’s new favorite. (but a bit drafty by the front door, which encourages the eating of hot dishes).

I can’t wait to get back for another visit because it with absolutely include a stop here. Thanks for everything!
