Bacalao has 4 cozy dining rooms with fireplaces that can host corporate and social functions.
Newfoundland shares its culinary history of enjoying salt cod with many other cultures. Bacalao (bak-al-OW) is the word used for salt cod (in various spellings and pronunciations) throughout the Mediterranean. The versatility and much-beloved nature of this time-honoured staple ingredient is the inspiration for our name and exemplifies our innovative interpretation of Newfoundland cuisine.
On my recent vacation to St. John’s, visiting Bacalao was at the top of my to-do list…and it did not disappoint. We ate there with groups of family and friends on two occasions, once for Saturday brunch and again for a Friday night dinner. The atmosphere was quaint, the service was fun and friendly, and the food was excellent. Not only is Bacalao’s take on Newfoundland cuisine extraordinary, but most importantly the food tastes great and looks great. From the breads, spreads, salt cod fritters, cod tongues, pot liquor shooters, halibut and caribou, everything was expertly prepared, fresh and well seasoned. I know where I’ll be going to eat the next time I get off the plane in St. John’s. You should be proud of what you have established! Top notch indeed.
Last night we gathered at Bacalao for a meeting of old girlfriends… and what a wonderful experience we had! The atmosphere was cozy, the food was delightful and the service as second to none. Well done all – we’ll be sure to recommend you to others. Congratulations on being yet another Newfoundland and Labrador success story!
Barbara and I experienced a wonderful dinner the charcuterie plate was exceptional. Salt cod and pork belly was a truly local food event. Our server, Danny, was attentive and informative, especially so when providing details of the food and its preparation.
Our meal here was as perfect as I thought it would be. The jiggs dinner cabbage rolls and the moose served in a burgundy pinot noir sauce with blueberries and bacon were absolutely fantastic. The atmosphere, service and food was perfect. I highly recommend this restaurant! Our server was Tracy and she was so wonderful! Thanks!
I was here with my wonderful husband and my two lovely children, for my birthday. We ordered the wonderful food, and ate it all. It filled us all up. It was a wonderful day and night, and I absolutely recommend everyone to go there. It was an memory that I shall never forget. It was classy, and just simply wonderful. I’m definitely coming back again! PS: The waiters were so friendly!
My two sisters and I visited Bacalao last night and I must say, we were so impressed with everything – from the atmosphere to the service and of course the food – it was all amazing! Thank you for a wonderful evening out!
Found your site via Google.. next visit too St Johns this coming summer I will visit your restaurant.. the menu looks excellent ! I can’t wait !
Best meal in the whole province the week we were there. Amazing food, presentation and service.
My husband and I were in NF for a wedding (his 1st trip). We had spent the day sightseeing and were hungry for something not “fast food.” We say the ad for Bacalao at the Delta Hotel. We hoofed it up Barter’s Hill and suffice it to say we were not disappointed. My husband’s halibut was the best he had ever tasted with the lime/butterscotch/miso sauce. I had the risotto. Excellent!! We shared the calamari as an appetizer. Fantastic. We recommended this place to a fellow CFA who was attending the same wedding. Kudos for your menu, your staff and your work with local suppliers.
Bacalao was one of our best dining experiences of the entire year, anywhere in the world! We had to come back for one last meal in Newfoundland before returning to New York. Thank you, Mike and staff, for showing us the best of Newfoundland – the local dishes and ingredients, the wines, and most of all your friendliness and hospitality. If only we had a restaurant like this in New York City! We can’t wait to come back again.
